Some Dodge Dakota History You May Have Missed The Dodge Dakota was a durable truck that provided pure excellence for drivers looking for the perfect alternative to a full-sized truck. Many automotive insiders considered it to be one of the most reliable vehicles in its class. After a revolutionary 1997 redesign, the Dakota was marketed with a Club Cab and regular model. An 8-foot and 6.5 foot bed box became available with the regular cab version of the 1998 Dakota. For 1998, the overall performance ante of this sensational pickup truck was increased with the help a powerful 250-horsepower 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 power plant in the R/T version. An impressive 5.2-liter Magnum V-8 engine was also available for the 1998 Dodge Dakota. Before the introduction of the Chevrolet Colorado SS in 2009, the Dakota was the only mid-sized pickup in the country with a V-8 engine. Other power plants on the 1998 Dakota included a 3.9-liter V-6 engine and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. A high performance part-time four-wheel drive system and a rear-wheel drive gave a big boost to the truck. An attractive four-door Quad Cab version hit the market in 2000. The truck’s V-8 engine was replaced with a 4.7-liter displacement. A new suspension system was given to the 2005 model. The 3.7-liter V6 and the 4.7-liter V-8 were the engine choices for the 2005 Dodge Dakota. The truck division of Dodge was infused with the Ram brand. Production for the Dakotas ended after a deep drop in sales.
