These models used the Chrysler S platform, which is an extended version of the Chrysler K platform. In 1987, they released a Grand Caravan model with a long wheelbase (LWB), which was also based on the Chrysler S platform. The idea for these types of vehicles stems from the time Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich spent at Ford Motor Company. The idea (and a prototype) for a minivan were rejected by Henry Ford II in 1974. After Sperlich moved to Chrysler Corporation, Iacocca followed, and the two produced the T115 minivan. This model was later used as a prototype for both the Caravan and Voyager models, commonly referred to as “Magic-wagons” (from a term used in advertisements). Chrysler launched their minivans a few months ahead of the Renault Espace (the first minivan in Europe, which was originally shown to executives in 1979 as a Talbot (3), but not released until 1984). They were the first of their kind and launched the modern minivan segment in America.
