The 1971 model of full-size vans was built first on the B platform when production began. Chrysler utilized the AB platform later. A "Uniframe" design, which required only one weld, made the Dodge platform stronger and lighter. The featured cargo floor is lower than that of the competition. (Noise, vibration, and harshness levels have been compromised.) Competing products do not handle as well as these vans. The lower center of gravity made handling easier. During its 1970's financial difficulties, the Chrysler Corporation egressed from the B-series van. The cab-over motorhome conversion was part of the B-series' popularity at the time. The construction of all B-series vans features is very similar. From era to era, slight variation has occurred. Bumpers, grille, hood, and front fenders underwent the most change. Changes were analogous to the full-size truck counterparts of each era. Federal “crashworthiness” standards dictate many changes.
