Once the PCM is located either within the dashboard or beneath the seat, the battery must be disconnected. Remember to reconnect the battery after the new PCM has been installed. After installation, it can take time for the PCM to readjust to the vehicle. The vehicle’s service manual will include the requirements for establishing the base idle speed. If the installer does not have access to the manual, he or she can test drive the vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 35 mph, after the PCM has been installed. As the vehicle continues to accrue mileage, the PCM typically readjusts over time. If the PCM affects the transmission, shifting may seem different until the computer has completely reprogrammed. After the PCM has been replaced, the check engine light or malfunction indicator should not be activated. If it is, something in the vehicle is still not functioning properly. If the coolant or oxygen sensors are not working properly, the engine control system my continue to run in an open loop. If the MAP, throttle position or knock sensor is defective, the spark timing may be off.
