God spent seven days creating the earth and heavens, deeming it to be good. Karl Probst spent time in 1940 developing the Jeep, creating something that rocked just as much. Since then, the Jeep has become legendary. How it came to be what it is today is an exciting story that also spans both time and place. In 1939, the United States military was concerned with replacing the motorcycle and other off-road vehicles with a piece of equipment that was just as capable and universal. There had been talk concerning the potential of the modified Model-T from Ford. However, further advances and refinements to any such automobile were desperately needed. In order to solve the crisis, the military put a contract up for grabs that pit 135 car manufacturing companies against each other in order to claim the winning design. There were definite specifications that the vehicle had to meet in order to make the grade. For instance, it had to be able to handle a payload that reached up to 600 pounds while the vehicle itself could only weigh 1,200 pounds. The wheelbase had to stay under 75 inches, and it had to possess four-wheel drive capabilities. Every detail was considered, including the fact that the windshield must be able to fold. Of all of the companies invited into the competition, only three accepted. Ford, Willy-Overland, and Bantam were up to the challenge. The First Jeep Was Born Karl Probst was taken on board by Bantam in 1940. With his help, this company became the very first to roll out a functioning prototype that matched the military specifications. The vehicle quickly gathered a number of nicknames, including the Old Number One and the Blitzbuggy. The prototypes from Ford and Willy-Overland quickly emerged, heating up the competition. Ford dubbed their vehicle the Pygmy while Willy-Overland labeled their prototype as the Quad.   Ultimately, the contract was granted to the Quad due to the prowess of the engine that they installed. Their engine was lovingly referred to as the Go-Devil and featured 60 horsepower. However, World War II made the military demand for vehicles so high that they also extended contracts to produce the vehicle to Ford as well. As time passed, Willy-Overland renamed their Jeep designs as the MB and the MA. Ford distinguished their vehicles by calling them the GPW and the GP. It is believed in many circles that the Jeep made a major contribution in the efforts that were required to win the war.
