The History of the Dodge Dakota The Dodge Dakota was a small truck, but it had no problem in providing exceptional results for drivers searching for a smaller alternative to big pick-ups. The Dodge Dakota was considered a top vehicle in its class by many reputable automotive insiders. The Dakota was available in the regular and Club Cab model after undergoing an impressive redesign in 1997. One could choose a 6.5 –foot box or an 8-foot bed box with the standard cab version of the 1998 Dakota. The maximum performance ante of this classic medium-sized pickup was increased significantly by the 250-horsepower 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 power plant in the R/T version. Small pickup lovers could also get a 5.2-liter Magnum V-8 engine for the 1998 Dodge Dakota. The Dakota was the only medium-sized pickup with a V-8 engine before the Chevrolet Colorado SS model. The 2.5-liter four cylinder and 3.9-liter V-6 engine was also available for the 1998 Dakota. For the 2000 model, a four-door Quad Cab version of the Dodge Dakota was introduced to the world. A 4.7-liter displacement PowerTech V-8 and a new suspension system came with this model. Production for the Dakota’s regular cab version stopped. This left the Quad Cab and Club Cab on the market. The 3.7-liter V-6 and the 4.7-liter V-8 power plant were the engine choices for the 2005 Dodge Dakota. In 2010, the truck division of Dodge changed. It fell under the Ram brand. It is safe to say that the Dakota could be viewed as a Ram product in its last two years. Production for the Dakotas stopped when their popularity dropped.
