Chrysler Town and Country Model History The Town and Country premium minivan was introduced in 1990 with standard dual sliding doors for the rear passenger area. In 1998, Chrysler remodeled the front end to feature new headlights and a grille with a winged badge. The LX and LXi versions had a 119.3-inch wheelbase, and the SX version had a 113.3-inch wheelbase like the prior year. The base model could accommodate up to seven passengers and featured keyless entry. The interior included multi-zone air conditioning and a standard AM\/FM radio. From 1997 to 2004, front-wheel drive was standard, but all-wheel drive was optional. Chrysler dropped the short wheelbase on the Limited model in 2000, which featured a rear entertainment system with a viewing screen and VCR. In 2001, a new EX trim level was introduced, and then Chrysler added the Stow n Go second and third row seats in 2005. The Town and Country underwent a redesign in 2008 that improved power and delivered a more sophisticated exterior. The 4.0-liter, V-6 engine generated 251 horsepower, which was a Limited edition standard. The 3.6-liter and 4.0-liter, V-6 engines also came with six-speed automatic transmissions. Until 2010, the premium minivan featured six-cylinder engines with 3.3-liter or 3.8-liter displacement sizes. All of the engines changed in 2011 to Pentastar V-6s that generated 283 horsepower. Standard features included LED taillights, a ParkView rear backup camera and SafetyTec.
