This unit controls everything from power windows and locks, to the engine and transmission. This unit is generally a reliable part of the vehicle and does not need to be replaced. One possible problem comes from the way the unit is installed in the car. Inside the unit housing, the PCM is surrounded by layers of a potting compound to protect it from high temperatures. As this potting compound heats and cools, it also expands and contracts which can lead to some malfunctioning.            One example of this malfunctioning is in the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has been reported to have some issues with intermittent stalling while driving. If this is a problem for your vehicle, the fix is relatively cheap and not too hard for a DIYer. Fixing this problem involves some soldering. You must also remove and then reapply the PCM potting compound.            What You Need to Complete the Job            The following materials are required for this project. You may also need to buy a few tools if you don’t already have them. For the soldering iron, make sure to get one that burns in the range of 25 to 40 watts. Most other supplies are things you probably already have.                            Soldering iron                                Solder (Should be about 0.2-inch gauge)                                Wicking                                Silicone caulking (Latex caulking will not work)                                Acetone (For removing excess compound from the motherboard)                                Wire bristle brush made of brass (Steel is too abrasive for this job)                                Propane torch                                        Repairing the Damaged Motherboard Pins            The problems with the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee PCM occur because the motherboard pins no longer connect to the processor properly. To fix this issue, you must remove the metal housing, which surrounds the motherboard and PCM. You can then solder the pins to the motherboard and then reattach the metal housing. You do not need to seal the motherboard back into the metal housing. While it comes this way from the factory, only the torx screws are really needed to hold the motherboard in place.            To access the PCM housing, you must remove the radiator overflow container and the battery. You then take apart the metal housing and hold the side of housing with the motherboard using vice grips. The back of the housing should then be heated using the propane torch. This will cause the potting compound to melt, allowing you to remove the motherboard. On the back of the motherboard, you will find the three pins that may need to be repaired. To remove the protective film covering the back of the motherboard, use the brush dipped in acetone to gently scrape away the covering.
