There was just one problem — the American public was buying Cherokees like they were going out of style, which, in a way, they were. Instead of ditching the old model, Jeep decided to keep both.            To kick off the Grand Cherokee’s release, Chrysler President, Bob Lutz, drove one through a window of the 1992 Detroit Auto Show. The Grand Cherokee offered more room than the Cherokee, driver’s side air bags, and anti-lock brakes. It also came equipped with rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive (offered as part-time Command-Trac or full-time Select-Trac), and a 190-hp, 4.0 liter, six-cylinder straight engine. Chrysler announced that it would be available in lots in the spring of 1993, which three models — base, Laredo, and Limited.            It was hailed as the first real competitor to the Ford Explorer released two years prior. However, Jeep only sold 84,600 models during its initial release of the ’92 models. It would go on to spur the American public’s desire for SUVs, though.            By 1994, Chrysler sold over 200,000 Grand Cherokees, nearly even with the Explorer. As part of a cry from the public for the nostalgia for the former Grand Wagoneer, Jeep included faux wood grain interiors in the cabins of some Grand Cherokees. It wasn’t well-received and Jeep dropped it the following year. Jeep also threw more power under the hood giving buyers the options of V-8 5.2 liter, 220 hp engines and Up Country suspension. All told, Jeep fulfilled 212,410 sales orders for its ’93 installment.            By 1995, Jurgen Shremp of Daimler-Benz took notice in the company’s success, as the Grand Cherokee pushed Chrysler’s profits ahead of most throughout the 1990s. Shremp offered a takeover offer and Jeep agreed. European versions began production in Graz, Austria while American versions added 4 disc brakes to the Limited version and changed the name of the Laredo to SE. All told, 238,390 units of ’94 Grand Cherokees sell from the lots in 1995.            The Grand Cherokee would reach the apex of its popularity in 1999 when just over 300,000 units were sold.
