The 1971 model of full-size vans was built first on the B platform when production began. Chrysler utilized the AB platform later. A \"Uniframe\" design, which required only one weld, made the Dodge platform stronger and lighter. The featured cargo floor is lower than that of the competition. (Noise, vibration, and harshness levels have been compromised.) Competing products do not handle as well as these vans. The lower center of gravity made handling easier. During its 1970's financial difficulties, the Chrysler Corporation egressed from the B-series van. The cab-over motorhome conversion was part of the B-series' popularity at the time. The construction of all B-series vans features is very similar. From era to era, slight variation has occurred. Bumpers, grille, hood, and front fenders underwent the most change. Changes were analogous to the full-size truck counterparts of each era. Federal “crashworthiness” standards dictate many changes. A fixed panel was between the front and side door on the passenger’s side. The side door mount was placed back several inches. Less interference with the front passenger seat was allowed because there was more side door access. In 1978, a transitional year for B-series vans, the panel was eliminated. During the 32 years of production, service companies, upbuilders, and other fleets found the Dodge Van to be very popular. From year to year, compatible installable options did not require redesign. The first 15-passenger van, favored by church and school groups, was pioneered by Dodge. It was also popular in ambulance and class-C RV conversions. The company dominated the market until Ford took over during the 1990s. Unique features included a sliding side door and a side-swinging tail door having a full-width window. Eventually, Chrysler was able to overtake the passenger wagon market when it pioneered the minivan. European-style models, that were more fuel efficient, replaced full-sized American-style vans. The Sprinters was the first model produced. Third Generation Dodge Ram Van Engine Bay The engine nearly every rear-wheel-drive Chrysler product used was available in the B-series vans. Of the four top makers of full-size vans, Dodge was last to market a passenger wagon and short-wheelbase van. The shortest full-size vans of the other Big Three makers disappeared from the market in the early 1990s. History of the Dodge Ram Dodge Ram has been called by many different names. Before it was the Ram, it had been called 'D' Truck or 'The Adventurer' until 1981. Before 1994, Rams were labeled as Half-Ton, Three-Quarter-Ton or Full-Ton trucks. At that point, the names changed to 1500, 2500 and 3500. What follows is a brief timeline that discusses the other major changes. 1989: All three Ram models were given an improved engine. 1994: For the first time, the Ram Truck took on the 'semi' look, which became quite popular. This year also saw the introduction of the 8.0-liter V10 engine. 2002: Ram's third generation 1500 came with a bigger grille, redesigned interior and an updated frame, powertrain and suspension. The 5.7-liter Hemi produced 100 more horsepower than the 5.9-liter engine of the second generation. The move to an independent front suspension improved the 4X4 experience. Aftermarket Ram accessories also started to gain traction. 2003: The Ram SRT-10, first manufactured in 2002 and boasting 500 horsepower, is named the fastest pickup on earth. The 2500 and 3500 models entered their third generation and gained an improved, heavier duty frame, a 5.7-liter Hemi, new interior offerings and a revamped body styling. While the 1500 had moved to a independent front suspension, the 2500 and 3500 retained the front axle. 2006: Ram trucks received redesigned head and tail lights. The new mega cab added 22\" of cab space, which meant the truck could seat six comfortably, and the back row even reclined. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 was designed with engine variable displacement technology, which improved the fuel efficiency three mpg in the city and four mpg on the highway. 2007: The 2500 and 3500s were outfitted with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel that replaced the obsolete 5.9-liter diesel. This move added 25 horsepower and increased torque by 40 pounds. The Cummins also came with a six-speed transmission 2009: This year marked Ram's fourth generation, and the truck gained a crew cab that was more spacious than the earlier quad cabs. New options included a Hemi engine, improved suspension and Rambox storage for trucks with a 5'7\" bed. This option gave drivers the ability to store items inside the bed walls. 2010: Ram production transfered to a new 'Ram Truck' division. All Dodge trucks, including the Dakotas, were moved to this new division. 2500 and 3500s were given an improved suspension, new styling, more interior options and an improved engine. The crew cab replaced the quad. 2012: Shoppers could choose to add a Rambox to any of the trucks. With the exception of the Power Wagon trim level, the manual fly shift was dropped for an electronic one. 2013: The styling was updated with a new grille and headlights. All trucks came with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Fly shifting returned, and a new eight-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission became available, which made the V6 model the most fuel efficient truck in its class. Because of improved electronic power steering, the 5.7-liter Hemi gained five horsepower. 2014: For the first time since the early 90s, the 1500 offered an optional diesel engine.
